What Happens To All Of The Crayons?
Feb 3 2008
Being the busy family that we are, we eat out now and again. When we go to kid-friendly restaurants they generally give us papers to color on and crayons. The paper ranges from a single sheet with fish or puppy dogs to elaborate booklets with tic-tac-toe games to word puzzles to fancier fish or puppy dogs. I assume they recycle the paper, but what do they do with the crayons? In 99% of the cases, they are brand new and are barely used when we leave them on the table (because we already have a million at home). I hope they are given to some kids or schools who could use them.

Good question. Maybe crayons can be melted down and reused? I’d say giving them to schools or churches or youth clubs would be a great idea. Most of those, in my experience, have loose boxes of crayons for you to use.
Hi Mrs. Micah – thanks for stopping by! I hope they give them to some kids who could use them. I wonder if there is such a thing as recycling/melting down crayons. I hadn’t thought about that.
Hmmm… good question. I know in my son’s kindergarten class when we lived in southern california one of the teachers collected all their used crayons to take with him down to Mexico. He went on a mission trip and all our barely used were given to the children there to use who loved getting them.
Hi Erin – That’s a great idea to take them to Mexico! I hope more teachers (and restaurant owners) do something creative like that.
Not sure. I’m thinking that they are given to kids. I know I have a whole slew of them from various establishments.
My real best guess is that they end up in the trash after they’ve been used.
Hi Wired Pig – My guess is that most of them end up in the trash too which is kind of sad on many levels from the kids who could use them to the environment, etc.
They do end up in the trash – why not do what I do – take the ones (that didn’t end up with dinner on them) and put them in a baggie in your diaper bag. That way, you have an extra backup plan next time you’re in a dr’s office or on a plane, or anywhere that doesn’t have crayons for your kids to draw with.
