The SOB Party’s Over But The Fun Is Just Beginning!
Oct 28 2007

Liz Strauss at Successful Blog held her 2nd year SOB birthday party on October 24, 2007.  The candles were lit, wine was uncorked, the people dropped in and out, the conversation was interesting, and the links were valuable.  Close to 700 comments were left.  I felt so honored to be invited to the party.  I barely made the invitation list since I was on the SOB 102 list and she held the party after week 104 (i.e., 52 weeks in a year makes 2 years of SOBs).  It was tough doing the math, but I eventually figured it out! 🙂

Thanks for the invitation Liz!  It was great fun.  My mother was in town, otherwise I would have written this post a bit sooner.

California Wildfires Burn
Oct 24 2007

My thoughts are with the people living through the worst wildfires in the history of California.   I have family in the area and they have been fortunate enough to at least temporarily escape the smoke and debris.  I can’t imagine what the other families are going through.  Many have lost their homes.  Hundreds of thousands of acres of land have been burned.  Remarkably, only a few people have been injured.

The LA Times has created a map of the fires here.   Someone on YouTube posted a NASA video of the view of the smoke from space here.  You can see a YouTube video of the fires from the San Diego coast line here and here.

As an outsider looking in what I find interesting is how often the News compares this disaster to Hurricane Katrina.  Last night on 20/20 the reference came up numerous times.  They mentioned how much smoother the FEMA response to this wildfire disaster has been compared to the hurricane Katrina disaster.  How much more organized temporary shelters in places like Qualcomm stadium has been.  They also kept mentioning all the celebrities who have lost homes in the area (who I’m assuming all have property insurance).

As I understand it, the wildfires were caused by a power line that sparked as it fell and that spark was fanned by the extreme Santa Ana winds.  What devastation a spark can bring!  In Louisiana (where they just elected a new governor) the devastation and chaos was brought on by water.

There are so many mixed thoughts and emotions that come up when comparing these two disasters one hardly knows where to begin.  Two different elements (fire and water) in two different US cultures (West and South) having two dramatically different results.  Since I can’t begin to analyze with sophistication the two happenings in time, here is a little poem (simple I know) I just came up with that I thought I’d share:

Wildfires rage through the night
Filling people, animals, and trees with fright
The ocean water is nearby
But useless in the current fight

When water spurns up in a rage
All we are left with is a wet history page
Of life searching for the light
But the bright red fire is useless in our watery cage

How to Trim Your Baby’s Nails: Baby Tip by Babble Soft
Oct 23 2007

Since I babble about business, babies, and parenthood here on this blog, those of you who come here to read my posts on entrepreneurship but do not have babies, please forward this post to your friends and family who do have babies.  For those who have babies and dabble in business, these tips might be right up your alley.  If you have babies and have no interest in business, then send it on to the folks you know who are knee-deep in business and encourage them to have a baby!  🙂

babytipteether

When our son was born we were told to cut his nails while he was sleeping in his crib.   Being the sleep-deprived, paranoid mom that I was, following are the reasons why this did not work for me:

  • This boy barely sleeps and you are asking me to risk waking him and losing my sanity to cut his nails?!?  No freaking way!
  • What if he’s lying on one side and I can’t get to the hand or foot I want to get to?  Then refer back to item #1.
  • What if some of the little nail cuttings find their way into his mouth, ears, nose, or belly button, and he can’t breathe and he and I both go into shock?  What if one of them simply pokes him…then refer back to item #1.
  • What if I accidentally cut too much of his nail and cut his skin…then of course refer back to item #1.
  • How do I lean over his crib or bassinet with a huge post-partum belly and conduct what to me seemed like minor surgery on my precious baby without breaking my back or having a let-down?

So being the resourceful parent/entrepreneur that I am, here’s what I did:

  • Put him in a reclining bouncer (with neck support if needed) and either a) wait until he fell asleep or b) put on a Baby Einstein video (back then it was OK to watch Baby Einstein videos).  I also occasionally did this while he was still in his infant car seat.
  • If he fell asleep and I didn’t think he would wake up (usually from age 0 to about 2 months), I would get some Kleenex tissue and place is strategically under his hands or feet.  I would then gently press the nail down so just the part that needed cutting would stick out over the end and commence trimming with the Safety 1st nail trimmer, which we still use today, that you can buy here at Amazon.com.   I would collect the trimmings in the tissue and throw them in the trash when I was finished.
  • If he didn’t fall asleep (2 months to present), I would do what I did in item #2 above but with a video (e.g., Baby Einstein) I knew he could not take his eyes off of.  I would trim the nails on his right hand, take a break then move to his right foot.  I would repeat on his left side.

To this day, I cut both of the kid’s nails in front of the TV.  It is a much less nerve wracking experience for all of us to do it while watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse than while they are asleep.  🙂

Happy Nail Trimming!

Random Stuff and Bobby Jindal
Oct 22 2007

What a day!  It started out with a potty training disaster and an overflowing toilet and ended (well not quite ended yet) with me playing Power Rangers with my son before putting him to bed.  In between, there was a plumber, a photographer, many business related calls/emails/documents, a trip to Jiffy Lube for an overdue oil change, a trip to Bed Bath & Beyond for an overpriced plunger, telling my 5 year old son repeatedly that he cannot play on a football team right now, dinner, and a few scenes of the Jungle Book.  Phew!

In the middle of my interesting day, history was made and that was the election of Piyush “Bobby” Jindal as the governor of Louisiana.  Now normally someone being elected as the governor of any state is news but NOT history making news.  Bobby is the first Indian American to be elected Governor of a US state.  Why is this interesting to me?  Well because I am South Asian.  I remember when I was a teenager in West Texas I would joke with my friends about the fact that since I was born in another country, I could never be the president of the United States.  Back then, the fact that I was a woman didn’t enter into my analysis of whether or not I could be President some day.  The only loophole we found was that I could become the Speaker of the House and if something (God forbid) happened to the President and Vice President, I could for a few seconds actually be President until they realized I was a naturalized US citizen and not a native born one.

As I’m sure you can tell, I did not end up pursuing a political career (thank goodness!).  I am pretty sure that the political world would have driven me nuts!

If you’d like to read about what other South Asians are saying about Bobby winning the election, look no further than Sepia Mutiny.  Sepia Mutiny is an irreverent blog for South Asians about South Asian stuff.  I happened upon it a few months ago and have been fascinated by the dialogue that goes on there.  The October 21, 2007 post on Bobby Jindal by Anna already has close to 500 comments!  Many of their posts draw hundreds of comments.

Personally, I do not have the same political leanings as Bobby.  He is a very strict conservative, and I am moderate in my political philosophy.  However, I have to say a hearty ‘congrats’ to him for making history.  Plus if he accomplishes what he says he wants to which is to get rid of corruption in Louisiana politics and bring in more aid for Katrina victims then more power to him! He along with people like Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo, and all the high-tech entrepreneurs of South Asian descent have made it a bit easier for the rest of us brown immigrants to contribute to the glorious US of A. 🙂

OK, now I’m going to go watch Heroes before ending my interesting day.  I wonder what tomorrow will bring…

Is The Name of Your Product (or Blog) Working For You?
Oct 21 2007

Some of you may have noticed that we have changed the name of one of our web applications from Baby Manager to Baby Insights.  Well at least one of you noticed because she (Carole) emailed me asking me when that happened and wondering if she missed a blog post about it and I’m just now getting around to telling the name change story…

So here’s how it all went down.  For the last year or so Erin and I have been wracking our brains trying to figure out a better name for Baby Manager.  My intent when coming up with that name was to imply that the Baby IS the Manager and not that someone could actually Manage a Baby.  However, looking back, it was probably not a good idea to pick a product name when you have been operating on little to no sleep for quite some time!

The topic of changing the name came up every few weeks in our house and then whammy!  The Austin American Statesman ran an article called Gadgets for new parents can ease baby’s first month on September 22, and the reporter wrote “Austin-based Babble Soft LLC’s Web-based program Baby Manager (babies can be managed!?)…”  Ouch!

We were out that same evening on one of our not-frequent-enough date nights and of course the topic of the name came up again.  We now had proof in print for thousands to read that we needed to come up with a new name and do it asap!   I’m sure the waiter at McCormick and Schmick’s wondered if we were crazy.  Erin threw out the name Baby Insights and in that instant I knew that was it because it encompasses what our application does: helps caregivers gain insight into their baby’s patterns so they can make informed decisions about baby care!  Since we spent practically the entire dinner talking about business, I wrote off the meal as a business expense.  It’s good to be married to an entrepreneur!

After we got home, I did a quick search on the Internet and here’s what I discovered:

I wasn’t too worried because we wanted to change the name to Baby Insights with an ‘s’ at the end.  I spoke to the owner of http://www.baby-insight.com/, and he was in the process of deciding what to do next with his company.  He told me that he would let me know if he planned to sell the name.  I didn’t bother contacting the Dutch company because I don’t know how to speak or type in Dutch.  The guy who owned http://www.baby-insight.com/ said he had tried to contact the Dutch company before and they really weren’t interested in selling.

I then discovered that http://www.babyinsights.com/ was taken, but it was parked.  I dug through the domain records and found some contact information for the owner.  I sent an email and left a voice message asking them if they were planning to sell the domain.  A guy replied saying he wasn’t sure what their plans were but that he would get back to me.  After a few days had gone by, he told me they would be willing to sell for what seemed to me a very large sum of moola.  Since I have only bought domain names directly from Go Daddy or Network Solutions, my jaw dropped at the price.  I told him I was too embarrassed to even give him a counter-offer because it would be so far away from what he was asking that he’d probably laugh (or cry) right then and there if I tried.  We could build an entire web application or maybe even two small ones for that price!  I told him I would get back in touch if things changed and we got overrun by millions of paying customers at once or happened upon a ton of money, knowing full well if either of those things happened, he would probably increase the price. 🙂

Fortunately, I had speculatively purchased http://www.baby-insights.com/, http://www.baby-insights.net/, and http://www.babyinsights.net/ from GoDaddy.

Add a little time pressure because we had just issued a press release on Baby Say Cheese to the intensity of the whole process and voila a new product name was born:  Baby Insights.

Now if we were AT&T, we would have spent millions of dollars coming up with the brand name Cingular only to change it back to AT&T Wireless soon thereafter.  Since we are currently bootstrapping, we don’t have the luxury of billions of dollars behind us.  Sometimes I think that’s a good thing and sometimes I think it’s a ‘how can I take this company to the next level on my piggy bank’ thing.  That’s a topic for another post.

So what do you all think of the new name?  I hope you like it!

How did you come up with your product or blog name?

A Smoking Fireman!?!
Oct 18 2007

I wasn’t planning to do a post today, but I couldn’t help myself after seeing what I saw today.  After I picked up the kids from school, I took them to a nearby fire station because our son had been asking me to take him there for the last week or so.  So the three of us went to the fire station, got out of the car, and walked toward the fire truck that was parked inside the station.  As we approached, I saw a person (just their legs and feet) sitting on a chair at the opening of the station door and a few wisps of smoke coming from the area that I assumed would have been his/her face.  As he became visible, I noticed that he quickly put out a cigarette and attempted to discreetly slip an unused one inside the Larry McMurtry book he was reading.

I think I was visibly taken aback and half expected my son to say something like “Look Mom, he’s smoking!  That’s bad for you”  as he has done on a few embarrassing occasions before.  After the fireman began opening the fire truck doors so the kids could crawl inside, I got over my initial shock and wondered to myself “Are firemen or women allowed to smoke on the job? Especially given that many fires are started by lit cigarettes?”  I then thought “Well if a fire broke out in the station, they would be well-equipped to put it out!” 🙂

Has anyone else seen such a thing as a fireman smoking?  Doesn’t that seem like an oxymoron or some other such ironic thing?

Portuguese Fortune Cookies?
Oct 17 2007

So the fortune cookie saga continues and it continues in Portuguese!  A reporter for BBC – Brazil saw my following posts on fortune cookies:

Those Darn Fortune Cookies (I was almost mentioned on the front page of the NY Times business section!)

Comments Now Working and Fortune Cookies

and emailed me to see if I would be willing to be interviewd for an article she was writing on fortune cookies.  She promised me fortune and fame that I would be mentioned because she was writing for BBCBrasil.com.  So, I said sure I’ll talk with you.  So the article called ‘Biscoitos da sorte’ ganham versão pessimista nos EUA was posted yesterday, October 16, 2007, and pretty much the only thing I recognize is my name. 🙂  I’m sure it is a great story.  If any of my readers or visitors happen to know how to read and translate Portuguese, please let me know what it says.

I happened to be eating at FireBowl Cafe again earlier this week and we grabbed some more fortune cookies that said:

  • Right now there’s an energy pushing you in a new direction.
  • It’s one of those low-key days that you’d rather spend just chilling.
  • Today is the day you let it go.  Your chance will come.
  • When the moment comes, take the last one.  (I’m kind of wishing I didn’t take the last one of something I ate last night because my tummy hurts right now!)

Right now I’m thinking (in addition to the fact that my tummy hurts) that FireBowl Cafe should be paying me good money (or at least send me a bag of fortune cookies) because I’ve mentioned their name on all of these fortune cookie posts!

In case anyone is wondering, I do actually eat lunch at other places. Today I met with some of my Advisors at a local Austin fave, Chez Zee.

Parenting a Start-Up and Niños (Kids) – My 2nd Guest Post
Oct 15 2007

Check out my guest post at Austin Startup called Parenting a Start-Up and Niños (Kids).  I had fun pulling it together! Let me know what you think.  Just for grins, here is a copy of the grid I created comparing a High Tech Startup with Kids:

So, being the good little high-tech entrepreneur that I am, I made a grid to outline the differences.

High-Tech Startup Kids
Time 8 to 16 hours per day; 5 to 7 days per week (unless you are Tim Ferriss, author of the 4 Hour Work Week) 24 hours per day; 7 days per week (unless you have a live in nanny or grandparents)
Resources Not many, but you have the option of raising funds and hiring people to help you out Less than “Not many” with no option to raise funds, but you can hire help if you already have money
Rewards
  • Public recognition
  • People kissing your _____
  • Reasonable salary (and maybe even benefits) if funded and/or your product/service is quickly accepted by the market (i.e., paying customers, advertisers)
  • Private recognition (even if your kid is Al Gore and he wins the Nobel peace prize your name probably won’t show up in the news)
  • If things turn out well and your kid is reasonably well adjusted, you have bragging rights and the satisfaction that they have the ability to positively affect the world around them.  Oh and they just might take care of you when you are older.
Risks
  • You fail miserably and your name is in the news as being a ‘loser’ for a few months and you could quite possibly end up broke.
  • If you do something illegal you can end up in jail but after doing your time you can continue building your Martha Stewart Classic Living empire.
  • Your kid turns out to be a serial killer and they want to interview you non-stop on CNN and FOX News.
  • Your kid hates you but still calls you for money.

If you cracked a smile or dared to chuckle, you might also be interested in:

To NDA or Not to NDA?  That is the question.

Those Darn Fortune Cookies (I was almost mentioned on the FRONT page of the New York Times business section.  Yeesh!)

Are We There Yet? When Will We Get There?!

I hope you are all having as much fun as I am with my start-up!

In case you are wondering what my first guest post was about, look no further than Entreprenuership: A Blessing or a Curse? on Wendy Piersall’s eMoms at Home blog.  Yes that’s my old curly-haired avatar not my NEW one. 😀

Rock. Paper. Scissors. How Do We All Win?
Oct 15 2007

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the amount of paper we use and come in contact with from newspapers, magazines, bank/credit card/mutual fund statements, printed paper, kids crafts, etc.  I’ve been meaning to write this post for quite some time but either didn’t have the time or wasn’t sure how to approach the topic but after writing a first draft down on October 5, 2007, I happened upon a post called What Have You Done Lately? by Lorelle on WordPress the very next day!  Her post led me to Blog Action Day, and I though ‘Holy Trees Batman,’ this is why I am supposed to write this post despite my Bloggo Fears that people will think I’m nuts or possibly a Tree Hugger!  And now because of Blog Action Day I have found the reason to do this post today, October 15, 2007.

I was motivated to write this post because I have been attempting to clean up my home office and the paper shuffling has been at an all time maximum.  I like to make space and get a sense of openness before embarking on a strategic thinking endeavor…which I am in the process of doing regarding the future direction of Babble Soft.  Boy do I wish we lived near a beach…because something about sitting under a huge umbrella, staring at the ocean, and listening to the waves with a margarita in my hand would really help get my thinking juices flowing!  🙂

I have seen some things written about reducing the amount of paper used in office environments such as:

But I haven’t seen much written about how each of us as individuals can help reduce the amount of paper products we come in contact with on a daily basis.  I did see a post made by Tim Sanders called Redesign your reading life where he discusses ideas on how to reduce the amount of paper by changing how you read.

But what I’m proposing is slightly different.  I have been looking at the things we don’t necessarily read and/or need to have a hard copy of.  So here’s what I’ve decided to do, and I took action on the day I wrote the first draft of this post back on October 5.

I finally called Pottery Barn and told them to take me OFF their catalogue mailing list for their pottery barn baby and PB teen catalogues.  I think I ordered one thing from them a few years ago and then somehow got on their catalogue mailing list.  Every time I would get them I thought to myself I really ought to tell them to quit sending these to me, but I was always in the middle of something or I said to myself ‘oh, I’ll do it later’ and immediately put them into our recycle bin.

Now it’s great to recycle but what if I hadn’t even gotten those catalogues to begin with for the last few years?  Would some trees have been allowed to continue growing?  Would the additional oxygen they breathed into the environment have had an affect on our heated discussions on global warming?  Would we have Cooler Heads?

Since I’m not a scientist and don’t play one on TV, I really have no proof indicating that this tree saving would happen but my gut tells me that reducing the amount of paper we receive can’t hurt.  Also common sense tells me that record amounts of rain and 100 degree temperatures being more common than not here in Texas this past year are probably an indicator of something.

It took me literally less than 2 minutes to call Pottery Barn, give them the codes on the catalogues and they removed me.  And you know what? She actually THANKED me for calling them to let her know!  I have to say I was pleasantly surprised because I was half expecting her to ask me why I wanted to be removed, try to convince me to continue receiving them, and/or convince me to order something.   Isn’t it funny how our assumptions of how we think something will happen might actually subconsciously dissuade us from taking immediate action?

So I’d like to challenge all of you to do something to reduce the amount of paper in your lives.   If you share in the comments what you did that might give others more reason to examine their paper-filled life.  If you are a blogger, I encourage you to post about this on your blog (please don’t feel like you have to link back to this post – I’m not writing about this for links) and let’s see if each of us making one small step to reduce the paper in our home lives can make a difference over time.

Canceling the catalogues to Pottery Barn was just the beginning, I still have a long way to go, and I’ll either update this blog or post about my progress in future posts.  Here are some other ideas:

  • Change statements (financial, bank, etc.) to e-statements if possible
  • Cancel subscriptions to magazines you no longer read
  • Encourage places like pre-schools and private schools to send you receipts by email if they can
  • Ask people who want to fax you something to scan and email it to you instead and then save it instead of printing it if possible
  • Ask the post office if they can quit sending those coupon pages, fliers, etc. that you never use.  I have no idea if it’s possible to have them quit sending bulk mail, but I guess it can’t hurt to ask.

If anyone has any other ideas, please share them!  If any of you have already posted on this topic, please let me know and I’ll update this post to refer to it.

One small action could quite possibly lead to a phenomenal reaction!  How will we ever know if we don’t try….

The Free Line is a Moving Target
Oct 12 2007

The Free Line

Yaro Starak at Entrepreneur’s Journey recently did a post called Moving The Free Line that I found fascinating.   He states: The idea is that there is a line, a point on your sales funnel where you distribute free value, and below the line comes all the paid-for products, moving from front to back-end.

Now I’ve always struggled with the “give things away for free” concept because of the ‘you get what you pay for’ mantra.  So if I’m going to get something for free I initially wonder if I’m about to get a lot of headaches trying to make things work.  But amazingly some of the best online services I use are free and they have wonderful customer service and wonderful products.  However, I do wonder how they make money and how they can sustain their businesses over time.  What is it about the web that makes giving away things for free so necessary and easy?

Yaro gives us ideas about when and how to move The Free Line and even gives us a picture for those of us who need pictures to help us visualize the concept.

Moving The Free Line

As a bootstrapping entrepreneur, it’s always a challenge to figure out what to give away for free.  We do have free applications and are exploring how to give away more for free but at the same time attract more in return.  It has been an interesting mental exercise and doing business online takes the whole ‘chicken and egg’ conundrum a step further in my opinion.

So the big question is:  “How do we make more money by giving more stuff away for free?”  Is the answer simply selling advertisements?  I don’t think so but I have yet to figure out what a different or better model might be.

Those Darn Fortune Cookies!
Oct 9 2007

Those fortune cookies I wrote about back on August 29, 2007 are still haunting me today.  Not only is that post consistently in the top 5 viewed posts because tons of people are doing searches on the term ‘fortune cookies’ for some reason, but also during the weekend of September 22, a reporter from the NY Times contacted me after reading that post about a story she was doing on the appearance of these not-so-great fortunes in Chinese restaurants around the country.

I was more than willing to help her out with the story.  It sounded like fun.  Coincidentally, I was planning to have lunch with a good friend at the same restaurant (Fire Bowl Café) where I got those bad fortunes that following Monday.  When I told my friend about the story she told me that her friend, Karyn Turnbull, had a weird fortune cookie experience at that same restaurant a while back during the time of her engagement.  After grabbing a bunch of fortune cookies which seemed ‘normal’ because apparently they switched suppliers, I spoke to the reporter and subsequently put her in touch with Karyn.

So the story — Don’t Open This Cookie (Disastrous Day Inside) – ran on the FRONT page of the New York Times Business section on October 8, 2007 (Columbus Day so the kids were off from school) and my quote got cut during the editing process because of space issues.  The reporter was nice enough to give me a heads up the day before so I wasn’t surprised, but I have to say the wind was taken out of my sails temporarily because who knows when I will get the chance to have my name, my company’s name, or my blog name on the FRONT page of the New York Times Business section (an entrepreneur’s dream) again!

So I write this post to illustrate that the life of an entrepreneur can be an emotional roller coaster.  On Saturday, October 6 I found out I was named an SOB (Yay!) by Liz Strauss and on Sunday, October 7 I found out I would NOT be mentioned on the FRONT page of the New York Times Business section.  Sigh.

But after some blah time and telling my 5 year old son in a humorous tone while tickling him that I was NOT going to be mentioned on the FRONT page of the business section of the New York Times and him asking me ‘what does that mean mommy?’ while laughing, I thought to myself maybe the reason the reporter found me was, in fact, to be connected to Karyn so that Karyn would get the opportunity to tell her fortune cookie story.  So that Karyn and her soon-to-be husband would have a story they could tell for the rest of their lives…to their kids, their grandkids, and their friends.  Who am I to feel bad about that! 🙂

Since this is my blog, I’m the editor, and I don’t have space constraints here is the rest of Karyn’s story:

The other half of our story… After Eric got the ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” fortune, he opened his second cookie, looked over at me, and said “sweetie, I think I got yours.” It said “what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine.” Both of those will be going into our wedding album! 🙂   We thought it was pretty funny. All of the fortunes I got that day were pretty boring and standard though. I don’t even remember what they said.

So Congratulations Karyn…may your wedded life be blessed with good fortune!

Now for a plea to my readers:  If you like this post, I’d be pleased as punch if you Stumbled Upon it and/or Digg (or is it Dugg) it.  I know I won’t get as many readers as I would have IF I had in fact been on the FRONT page of the New York Times business section (yeesh) but maybe I can come close with a Stumble or Digg or two. 😀

Are There Any Heroes in Your Life?
Oct 7 2007

There are in mine!  My husband and I watch the NBC Heroes TV show every week (thank goodness for DVRs).  We got hooked in the first season and are hooked again.  This season has started off a bit slower than I expected, but I am hopeful that some really cool stuff is up the writers’ sleeves.

The characters are great.  The drama is intense.  The science fiction is way cool.  Wikipedia has a list of all the characters if you are interested in knowing their names and backgrounds.  I know that several critics say the show reminds them too much of X-Men but to them I say ‘pfftph’ because who actually gets enough of the X-Men (and Women)?!?  Plus since this is a TV show, there is more time to develop the lives and characters of each of the actors and actresses.

The one major criticism/comment I have is: How is it possible that the genetics genius Dr. Mohinder Suresh did not have a clue for such a long time that he was hanging out with the infamous Sylar?  How could that smart and extremely handsome Dr. Suresh not realize he was leading the EVIL dude Sylar to all of the other genetically gifted individuals so Sylar could cut their heads off and steal their gifts?  That did not make sense to me.  Oh well…he better make up for that lapse in judgment in the current season!

NOTE:  I was motivated to do this review for Problogger’s Last 24 Hour Giveaway competition.   I really, really need want to win that $2,000 Internet marketing package being donated by IttyBiz.  Since one kid is taking a nap and the other is at soccer with hubby, I said to myself “what better thing do I have to do on a Sunday afternoon than enter (by writing a review) for a great prize that if I won would really help me with my business.”  It’s strange how us entrepreneurs think, isn’t it. 🙂

UPDATE October 9, 2007: As Pearl at Interesting Observations mentioned in the comments below, I wrote a little poem for my entry. Since she mentioned it, I thought I’d share it here:

IttyBitty spider crawled up and about the web
Down came the spam upon the spider’s head
Up came the Google juice (should have written Akismet) and dried up all the spam
And IttyBitty spider crawled through the web again. 🙂

I Am An SOB! And I Am Ecstatic!
Oct 6 2007

Purple SOB Button

Much to my shock and amazement I was named an SOB (Successful and Outstanding Blogger) by none other than Liz Strauss, the goddess of bloggers.  I have seen her name mentioned on several of my favorite blogs, and I have to tell you I was stunned at being selected since I am a fairly new blogger.  I figured it would take me a very long time to make it on the radar screen of someone like Liz.  My eyes literally welled up when I went to her post and saw my little ‘ole entrepreMusings logo there.  There’s nothing like the feeling of having someone who is respected and admired in a field taking their precious time to shine their light on you.  It’s like a pat on the back…an ‘atta girl’ as they say here in Texas.  Thank you Liz!

I’d also like to thank Wendy Piersall at eMoms at Home because I’m pretty sure that her Stumbling Upon my Are We There Yet? When Will We Get there?! post is how Liz found me.

But most importantly a BIG thank you goes to Connie Reece at Every Dot Connects who got me started on this wild and crazy blogging ride back in May 2007!  She is an SOB too.  🙂
